Vorig jaar veroverde Bilbao, toen nog met Thijs De Ridder, zijn eerste Europese trofee door in eigen huis met 72-65 te winnen van PAOK en de schade in Thessaloniki tot 84-82 te beperken. PAOK won in 1991 de Saporta Cup en in 1994 de Korac Cup, twee bekers die in 2002 opgingen in de later opgerichte EuroCup.

De FIBA Europe Cup wordt gezien als de vierde internationale basketcompetitie voor mannenclubs in Europa.
